Spartans Come Home to North Springs High School For Reunion of Classes of 1966-1979

The North Springs High School Reunion Committee, led by Al Whitton - Class of ’73 and Lynne Malloy and Lander Stoddard - Class of ’74, is planning a multi-year class reunion to be held in Alpharetta on Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, 2010. . The Classes of 1966 - 1979 will gather at the Atlanta Marriott Alpharetta on Friday, September 3rd for a hospitality reception before joining their individual classes for dinner at several area restaurants. Saturday’s schedule includes golf, tours of North Springs High School and meetings with teachers and coaches prior to the main event at the Marriott’s hotel ballroom beginning at 7pm.

Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation Celebrates 4th Anniversary with "Heroes and Hotcakes"

For the past four years, the mission of the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation (APSF) has been to promote safety in the Alpharetta community so that we not only feel safe, but improve our safety by actively supporting our community’s police officers and firefighters. Now, there is something that the community can do to assist the APSF and the local heroes who work every day to ensure our safety - and it involves eating delicious pancakes.

Hotel Equities Names Susan Holbrook Sales Award Winner of the Quarter

At a recent awards luncheon, Hotel Equities (www.hotelequities.com) awarded the company's Sales Award to Susan Holbrook for her top performance during the past quarter. Ms. Holbrook serves as the Sales Director for three Alpharetta hotels: the Fairfield Inn & Suites-Alpharetta, the TownePlace Suites-Alpharetta and the Wingate by Wyndham-Alpharetta. She has responsibility for initiating sales and implementing the marketing strategy for both corporate and leisure market sales for the hotels under the leadership of Elizabeth Derby, Hotel Equities Director of Sales and Marketing. Capitalizing on the special amenities and services provided by each of the three hotels, she works closely with the three respective General Managers. Given quarterly, the sales award takes into account the performance of the Sales Director and her hotels including sales revenues, actual sales compared to budget, market share, and solicitation goals that require her to call on top accounts, follow sales leads, and prospect new accounts. "Susan has done an outstanding job in revitalizing sales for her hotels in this tough economic market," said Elizabeth Derby, HE Director of Sales and Marketing. "She knows the area and she continues to build great relationships with people in the community. She works consistently to deliver outstanding service to our clients and guests." Ms. Holbrook joined Hotel Equities in 2001. Before that, she held a sales position at the Residence Inn by Marriott Peachtree Corners and then served as Director of Sales for the Residence Inn by Marriott Alpharetta NorthPoint. Race After the Taste

After indulging in over 60 restaurants at the Taste of Alpharetta, come Race after the "Taste" at the 14th Annual Mayor's Challenge 10K/5K Road Race on Saturday, May 15, 2010 7:15am at Wills Park. Approximately 1,000 runners are expected to participate in this annual community event. The One Mile Fun Run will begin at 8:30 am.

Pre-Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Race day fees are $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Registration is available at www.awesomealpharetta.com.

All race participants receive a t-shirt. Register early to guarantee your size. A runner's pancake breakfast will be provided at the finish line by The Original Pancake House from 7:30-9:30am. The race will be held rain or shine.

The proceeds benefit the Alpharetta Rotary Club’s annual projects which include Habitat for Humanity, Drake House, Homestretch, North Fulton Community Charities, Stand-up for Kids (Independence High School), Adult GED Program (Independence High School), Shop with a Cop, Adopt-a-mile Program, and sending care packages to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. The non-profit organization's motto is "service above self" and as such, provides volunteers and financial support for community and international service projects.

Michael McAlpine of the Bell Research Center, located in the Historic Cumming School House, Cumming, GA, will be the speaker for the Thursday, May 20th, 2010 Alpharetta Historical Society's Monthly Meeting. The meeting and program will be held at the Mansell House & Gardens, 1835 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30009.

The Bell Research Center is a Repository of Southern History and Genealogical References from the Migration Trail. The Migration Trail ran throughout the southeast from Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Mississippi.

Additional topics include the Civil War Units that impacted our area, specifically, Colonel Bell of the 43rd Regiment and the 42nd "Milton Tigers" Regiment; and some of the veterans in the units and what they did.

Join us for a "Meet 'n Greet" that starts at 7 pm followed by the program which will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Immediately following the program, the 2010-2011 Elections will be held. This is a very important election that will continue to move the society forward in efforts to reach our communities in areas of education, preservation, history, historic landmarks and the acquisition and preservation of artifacts that are important to the future of our city. We also plan to have new and exciting events for all to enjoy in the coming months.

Disc Golf Growing in Popularity

Come see why everyone is excited about disc golf! The Atlanta Open, presented by ReMax, will take place April 17-18 at Central Park in Cumming, Georgia, and East Roswell Park in Roswell, Georgia. Ken Climo, the 2009 Atlanta Open Champion from Clearwater, FL, will defend his title in this tournament which offers players the 14th largest purse, $15,000, out of all PDGA events. The Atlanta Open will also host at least seven past World Champions including the current World Champion, Avery Jenkins, and his sister, Women’s World Champion, Valarie Jenkins. The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau is a sponsor of the Atlanta Open and the host hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn Atlanta/North Alpharetta. The event is free for spectators.

Alpharetta CVB Hosts Travel Writers

The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) hosted six travel writers on March 18 in conjunction with a weeklong media familiarization trip through the Atlanta Metro Travel Association. The theme of the tour was Southern Delights and Historic Sites.

During their time in Alpharetta, writers - whose work has been featured in publications ranging from Better Homes and Gardens to The Wall Street Journal, enjoyed breakfast at The Original Pancake House, a tour of American Legion Post 201 and the Walk of Memories, as well as a trip to the only American Girl Boutique and Bistro in the Southeast. The purpose of hosting travel writers is to give them a memorable, first-hand experience of Alpharetta so they are better equipped to write about Alpharetta as a tourism destination.

Taste of Alpharetta

With a humble beginning in 1990, the Taste of Alpharetta has grown to the largest “Taste of” festival in the South. Four restaurants set up shop in Milton Square Park across from Alpharetta City Hall twenty years ago, starting a tradition that no family, foodie or festival- goer will want to miss. Spanning the width of Old Milton Parkway from Main Street (SR 9) to Wills Road and spilling into Wills Park, the 20th Annual Taste of Alpharetta promises to provide all the eats, treats, sights, and sounds one would expect from such a festival.

As always, local chefs are working to create appetizing menus in preparation to serve over 200,000 delicacies that night. Stop by to sample Krispy Kreme bread pudding, citrus French toast, crawfish etouffee, lettuce wraps, and bourbon pecan pie, just to name a few.  With over 50 restaurants in attendance, you are bound to find something to your liking. The variety ranges from Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails, to Nahm Thai Cuisine, to Vintage Pizza.

These and other participating restaurants serve up an amazing array of appetizers, entrees and desserts from their menus for just $.50 to $3 per sample. Tickets may be purchased on-site the evening of the Taste or pre-purchased at Alpharetta City Hall, 2 South Main Street.

"The Taste of Alpharetta, in its 20th year, promises to be the best yet," said Mayor Arthur Letchas. "My wife and I would not miss it.  Between the food, the chef’s competition and the entertainment, it is a perfect night out."

Please save gas and use our free shuttle system. Park and ride shuttle options will be available at Alpharetta City Hall (on South Main Street), Public Super Market (on Old Milton Parkway at Haynes Bridge) and Milton Center (the old Milton High School at Milton Avenue).

Admission, shuttle and parking for the 20th Annual Taste of Alpharetta are FREE. Park and walk options are available at the Wills Park Equestrian Center (on Wills Road) and Alpharetta Community Center (on Roswell Street).

The Culinary Arts and Music Stage will feature chef competitions from 5 to 7 p.m. followed with live music from 7 to 10 p.m. Come and spread your blanket for a full night of entertainment in Wills Park.

Top chefs pair against one another in contests for Best Appetizer/Salad, Best Fast Casual Entrée, Best Fine Dining Entrée, Best Dessert and Best Presentation. Judges will include local restaurant reviewers and food editors. Attendees can vote for their favorite restaurant at the Culinary Arts and Music Stage, designating one restaurant as the Taste of Alpharetta People’s Choice recipient. Additional judges will walk Restaurant Row to award the Best Booth presentation.

After dining at all of their favorite restaurants in one night, Taste of Alpharetta families can look forward to playing at Wacky World and on the dozens of fun inflatable activities, rock climbing wall, trains and more in the Fun Zone. By the Lion’s Club pavilion at Wacky World, the Reptile Wrangler will feature educational reptile shows all evening plus exhibits. Children can also try out wacky hair, face painting, balloon art, henna tattoos, and a full farmyard with pony carousel. Metro Atlanta radio stations will add to the evening’s entertainment.

Artists Get Creative as They Prepare for Alpharetta’s Juried Fine Arts Festival

Artists from throughout the U.S. hone their craft, preparing for the Alpharetta Arts Streetfest. This colorful festival will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, 2010 on Milton Avenue in the Alpharetta Historic District. Admission and parking are free to the public.

Festival-lovers and arts enthusiasts can look forward to two days of strolling through outdoor galleries filled with fine paintings, mixed media, photography, pottery and jewelry, as well as textile, glass, wood, metal and paper art.

"It is my pleasure to welcome artists from across the country to the City of Alpharetta," said Mayor Arthur Letchas. The program will be presented by Phillip and Janine Whiteman of Alpharetta, long time Civil War Reenactors and Presenters. They have an extensive and authentic collection of 1800’s period clothing and will be sharing some of these pieces on display at the Mansell House & Gardens beginning at 7 p.m. prior to the presentation.

Alpharetta Super-Y Soccer Player Makes International All-Star Team

Eighteen players for Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star Team, which is comprised of talented high school soccer players from across the United States, were selected December 29. The Disney All-Star Team will represent the United States against top international youth teams in Europe during the summer of 2010. The players were selected for the All-Star Team after participating in a Soccer Showcase, with more than 520 teams from around the country, which annually attracts the most decorated high school soccer players in the nation. Based on performance during the Showcase, Stewart Abrahart, a player for the Alpharetta Elite and Alpharetta United Super-Y team, and student at Greater Atlanta Christian School, was selected among the eighteen elite players. At a towering six foot, three inches, Stewart plays in defense as a Left Back.

The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and Welcome Center will move to a new location at Park Plaza, 178 South Main Street, Suite 200, Alpharetta, Georgia 30009, as of October 22, 2009. The Welcome Center functions as an entity of the Alpharetta CVB and serves as a frontline resource for tourists and also as a fulfillment house for the thousands of leads generated from the CVB’s marketing efforts. Over the past ten years, the Alpharetta CVB and Welcome Center operated in two separate locations. The new location will bring together the Alpharetta CVB and Welcome Center, creating synergy and allowing for shared resources. The move will also save the organization money, allowing more dollars to be used to market and promote Alpharetta as a premier tourism destination, which is in line with the Bureau’s mission.

During the meeting, staff from the Alpharetta CVB provided hoteliers with information regarding major conferences and sporting events coming to Alpharetta and explained how hotels can partner with the CVB in a coordinated effort to generate additional room nights. The following topics were presented in the meeting, bringing together all the Alpharetta CVB strategies directly related to attracting more tourism to Alpharetta: Web site enhancements, on-going public relations efforts, advertising and promotion campaigns, and group sales activities.

IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon Just Days Away

On Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, IronKids will hold its seventh event of the national triathlon series in Alpharetta, Georgia, drawing youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age. The triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. and take place at Wills Park. Participants will swim in the outdoor pool, bike on closed roads and run on paved walkway and grass. All finishers will receive a commemorative medal, trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group and the top five finishers in each age group will qualify for the IronKids National Championship on Oct. 4 in Tucson, Arizona. Local partners include the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the City of Alpharetta. The Alpharetta Historical Society (AHS) is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization governed by the State of Georgia. It operates under a Board of Trustees consisting of elected trustees, officers, and standing committee chairpersons. The Alpharetta Historical Society invites you to attend the General Meeting, on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Mansell House at 7:30 p.m.

Ed Forte, teacher at Milton High School, is passionate about history and will be the presenting speaker at the meeting. As he presents information, Forte will be dressed in Revolutionary Period clothing and accompanied by an equipment display. He will talk about war camps and the women who followed the camps to take care of the men who were fighting.

The motto for the Alpharetta Historical Society is to "Preserve the Past, in the Present, for the Future", helping inspire families, young and old, to find their passion through the life of yesteryear by maintaining and sharing its collections, preservation and dissemination of accurate historical information through activities and workshops.

IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon Just Weeks Away

On Sunday, September 13, 2009, IronKids will hold its seventh event of the national triathlon series in Alpharetta, Georgia, drawing youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age. The triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. and take place at Wills Park. Participants will swim in an outdoor pool, bike on closed roads and run on paved walkway and grass. All finishers will receive a commemorative medal, trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group and the top five finishers in each age group will qualify for the IronKids National Championship on October 4 in Tucson, Arizona. Local partners include the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the City of Alpharetta. Host hotels, Staybridge Suites, Embassy Suites Atlanta - Alpharetta and the Hilton Garden Inn North Point, will offer discounts to participating families.

Director of IronKids, Michelle Payette, comments, "The IronKids mission is to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. We are excited that IronKids is returning to such a great event venue at Wills Park in beautiful Alpharetta. Alpharetta is an active, health-focused community and one that not only supports our goals, but also fully embraces them."

The IronKids Expo, along with registration and packet pick-up, will take place at Wills Park on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, September 13, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Additionally, registration will take place on race morning, Sunday September 13, from 6:30 a.m. until 15 minutes prior to each division entering the water. IronFlix, a children’s film festival that is free and open to the public, will be available in multiple viewings, on Friday, September 11, (evening outdoor screening) and throughout the day on Saturday, September 12. Presented by KIDS FIRST!, viewers will experience a mix of inspirational animated shorts and feature films.

- Senior (ages 12 to 15): 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run

World Triathlon Corporation acquired IronKids from the Sara Lee Corporation that owned the event series since 1985. IronKids’ events have seen more than 40,000 participants in its history. IronKids has introduced some of the sport’s greats with past participants including seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong and U.S. Olympians, Hunter Kemper and Laura Bennett. Car buffs can see plenty of antique cars at the Onion Ring Rally the evening before the event, Friday night, September 18, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m., at the Varsity off Haynes Bridge Road and Westside Parkway in Alpharetta. On Saturday, Classic car lovers can explore automobiles of every model and make on display at the car show. For a $25 charitable donation, enthusiasts are invited to exhibit their vehicle. Prizes will be awarded.

The Kid’s Fun Zone will include a petting zoo, pony rides, train rides, giant slides, rock climbing wall, and plenty of exciting activities for the youngsters. Our own Thrashers and Hawks will have a presence at the festival. Alpharetta Historical Society Celebrates 30th Anniversary of First Meeting

The Alpharetta Historical Society (AHS) will celebrate its 30th anniversary at the monthly general meeting, Thursday, August 20, with an old-fashioned covered dish picnic commemorating the group’s first meeting, which was held August 21, 1979, when the organization was known as the Old Milton County Historical and Genealogy Society. This commemorative family celebration will take place from 6:00-9 p.m. at the Mansell House and Gardens on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta. To participate in the picnic, attendees are asked to bring a covered dish; the AHS will provide the rest, including the meat, utensils and drinks. John Marvin Dorris will lead a chat on the porch of the Mansell House. This fun-filled, relaxing celebration will feature storytelling and old time music and sign-a-longs. The Membership Committee invites all AHS and Alpharetta Garden Club members and their families, past and present, and any families potentially interested in membership, to join us for this special celebration.

The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is one of the first CVBs in the state to apply for Accreditation through a brand-new program established through a partnership between the Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (GACVB) and Columbus State University’s Cunningham Center for Leadership Development.

Hospitality Highway Recognized at State Capitol

The Hospitality Highway committee was recognized by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor on October 15 at the Georgia State Capitol for receiving the Southeast Tourism Society’s (STS) Shining Example Award for Travel Attraction of the Year. Governor Sonny Perdue presented each Hospitality Highway community, along with the Southeast Tourism Society, Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia Department of Economic Development, with a signed proclamation. Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle also recognized the group.

The Alpharetta Arboretum at Wills Park, a living natural museum, was unveiled on Saturday, September 27th. The event began at 10:00 AM and included a guided tour of the 26 trees which comprise the arboretum. The arboretum showcases the natural setting and beauty of many native tree species of the southeastern United States and provides an educational perspective on the wide choices of available trees suited for planting in our urban landscape.

The Alpharetta CVB recently commissioned award-winning singer/songwriter James Casto to write a song entitled “Awesome Alpharetta.” The song was unveiled on February 7 at the Alpharetta Welcome Center as part of Alpharetta’s 150th Anniversary History Walk. The song was created to evoke a warm, welcome feeling about Alpharetta, using words that describe Alpharetta as a sophisticated, small town, charming city that you want to visit as soon as you can. We hope you enjoy listening to how our new song represents all that Alpharetta has to offer!
