A National Travel and Tourism Week celebration helped draw more visitors to the Alpharetta Welcome Center and one was rewarded with tickets to the 2012 Taste of Alpharetta. One lucky winner, Claudia Varner of Alpharetta took home $25 worth of tickets to the 22nd Annual Taste of Alpharetta, enabling her to enjoy tasty samples from over 50 of Alpharetta’s restaurants.

Alpharetta Welcomes the Alliance Ride and Epic Handcycling Road Race

Returning to Alpharetta for the third consecutive year is the Scott Rigsby Foundation’s 2012 Alliance Ride and Epic Handcycling Road Race sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. The event begins Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 a.m. at Jackson Healthcare’s corporate headquarters, 2655 Northwinds Parkway in Alpharetta. All proceeds support wounded warriors from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and will be used for the Georgia Warrior Alliance Wounded Warrior Family Retreat program. The race will start with an aerial display performed by the U.S. Army Silver Wings Team from Ft. Benning.

The Welcome Center staff will be offering refreshments and information about Alpharetta and the services of the CVB. ShamRockin’ For A Cure is a St. Patrick’s Day party with a purpose to raise funds to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Now in its fourth year, the definitive party on the north side returns to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park Saturday, March 10, 2011 at 7 p.m. In 2011, ShamRockin’ raised over $120,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and this year’s goal is $175,000.

Alpharetta Historical Society Presents Nathaniel Greene

The Alpharetta Historical Society’s February program will be led by Jack Ferguson. Dedicated to making sure history will never be forgotten, Jack will be speaking on Nathaniel Greene: Military Genius of the Revolutionary War. Born and raised in Atlanta, Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He became interested in genealogy while preparing for a family reunion and later joined the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and several other historical and heritage societies. In an effort to teach children about the importance of history and keep it interesting, Jack also makes historical presentations to school classrooms. Jack lives with wife, Louisa Carter, whom he married in 1947 and together they have three daughters, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The couple has traveled over 150,000 miles participating in SAR activities to ensure that history will never be forgotten.

David Belle Isle Joins Alpharetta CVB Board

Mayor David Belle Isle has joined the Board of Directors of the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) taking over the seat vacated by former mayor Arthur Letchas upon his retirement at the end of 2011. Alpharetta’s current mayor is an ex-officio voting member of the board as established in the CVB’s bylaws. “I am honored to serve on the Alpharetta CVB board in support of tourism for Alpharetta,” says Belle Isle.

D.C. Aiken Appointed to Alpharetta CVB Board

D.C. Aiken has been appointed to the board of the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) by the Alpharetta City Council. Aiken will serve as one of four ex-officio voting directors whose terms on the board run concurrent with their terms in office as established in the CVB’s bylaws. “We look forward to having D.C. on our board,” says Janet Rodgers, President and CEO.

Three winners were drawn Saturday, December 17 in the Downtown Alpharetta Trade Association’s first annual holiday promotion sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and First Citizens Bank. Elfaretta plush toys were hidden in 33 downtown Alpharetta businesses beginning November 1 and shoppers were encouraged to find them and enter to win one of three prize giveaways.

And autumn in Alpharetta is certainly no exception! The season begins with a blaze of activity as Alpharetta prepares for one of the largest IronKids events in the country. Over 1,400 junior athletes, ages 6 to 15, are expected to swim, bike and run their way through Wills Park on September 11, competing for a chance to participate in the IronKids National Championship. With an emphasis on fitness, fun and safety, all finishers will receive a commemorative medal as well as a top notch youth triathlon experience. The IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon is returning to Wills Park on Sunday, September 11 and registration activity indicates that this will be another record-setting event. Over 400 athletes have signed up to participate with only one month to go before the race. The Alpharetta event, returning for the third consecutive year, has had the largest field in the IronKids National Series for the past two years. This year registration will be limited to 1,600 participants.

Alpharetta’s Big Creek Greenway Extension Complete

The newest section of the Big Creek Greenway from Webb Bridge Road north to Marconi Drive was officially opened for walking, jogging, biking and skating at a ribbon cutting ceremony held on June 13, 2011. The extension project, which began in May of 2010, was substantially complete by May of this year and includes a 121’ bridge over Big Creek and a small parking facility off Marconi Drive. This adds .85 miles to the Alpharetta section of the Greenway, bringing its total length to approximately 8 miles.

Family Reunion Workshop a Hit with Reunion Planners

The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau hosted a successful Family Reunion Workshop April 28 at Hotel Sierra where their Family Reunion Specialist shared her expertise and a variety of planning tips with reunion organizers. A number of door prizes were awarded, including a Kodak digital camera. The event was free and open to the public.
